The contestants emerged as winners during the preliminary rounds held since April this year in different provinces.

Pageant organiser, David “Apama” Machowa told NewsDay yesterday that preparations for the big day had begun after securing a venue for the event.

“We had to opt for December 14 because the venue’s owner (Biggie Chinoperekwei) is out of the country. We, however, managed to contact him and it is confirmed that City Sports Bar will host the popular event,” he said.

“We are done with the preliminary rounds and 13 contestants are going to compete for the crown. This year’s edition is different from others because we really took our time to bring out a more professional and interesting event. The contestants are ugly enough to give the reigning champions a difficult time.”

Mr Ugly 2016 winner will represent Zimbabwe at the Mr Ugly Africa to be held in South Africa next year.

Reigning Mr Ugly, Miso Sere will also face stiff competition from three-time winner, William Masvinu, who is part of the contestants, after winning in the preliminary round.

Mr Ugly pageant was popularised in 2012 after the Epworth-based Masvinu took over form Brian Mateyazondo.

Masvinu, a porter at Mbare Musika bus terminus, retained the title the following year.

He, however, lost it to Sere at a tight contest held last year.
