Bhasopo told NewsDay that the cultural showcase, which drew interns from different countries, was an enriching experience, where young people underwent a four-week training programme.

“It is not a competition, but after every two years, the Ryan International School brings together interns from various countries to teach their students and, at the end (of the programme), they carry out a festival with the children,” she said.

“The trainees are first trained for four consecutive weeks before they present the various cultures to their parents and guests.”

Bhasopo said this was a great opportunity for Chipawo, as an institution, to grow both in maturity and creativity.

“For Chipawo, our young people do get to experience lots of interaction including culture and exchange networks. It is a great learning curve. It was a great festival and I had the privilege of seeing the last part of it in which, Martha (Saidi), one of the trainees, did a dance with the kids from Jah Prayzah’s song, Mudhara Vachauya and it was amazing,” she said

Zimbabwe is represented by Saidi, a Chipawo graduate and arts educator and Tinashe Rukweza.

The two are teaching students from Ryan International School about Zimbabwean history, songs, dances and stories.

Established in 1989, Chipawo is an arts education for development and employment trust, which works with children and young people in child development. Its members have been involved in many international festivals, raising Zimbabwe’s flag high.
