The Old Mutual-sponsored race is expected to attract the country’s top athletes, among them Rutendo Nyahora, Wirimayi Juwawo and Constance and Faith Nyasango, among others.

This year’s winners in the main category 21km races will walk away with $1 000 cash prize.

Manicaland Athletics Board chairman, Joshua Matume yesterday said they were ready to host the race, before saying he expected it to be tough.

“We are ready to host the 21km Vumba Half-Marathon, we have done all the necessary preparations for the race, athletes from all over the country are going to fight for the top honours,’’ he said. “This year’s winner in the main 21km main category will get $1 000 and we are expecting a tough competition,’’ he said.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president, Tendai Tagara said a stong line-up was expected in this popular race.

‘’I think all the athletes, who participated at the Olympics in Brazil, have recovered. The Vumba half marathon is one of the toughest races in the country, most athletes spend a lot of time preparing for the event, the terrain is good and you need endurance to compete in the race ,’’ he said.

Olympians, Sharon Tawengwa and Juwawo are devotees of the event as they believe the Vumba 21km race always helps them prepare for tough races on the international scene.
