NEWSDAY photojournalist, Tafadzwa Ufumeli has been shortlisted for this year’s Free Press Unlimited Award in the Newcomer of the Year category.

The Free Press Awards honour journalists who risk everything to bring the public news. It also recognises media pioneers, who fight for equality and justice and those who persevere under the most difficult circumstances.
Ufumeli was shortlisted together with two other journalists from Albania and Nigeria.
Entrants were required to submit four of their works published in the past 12 months.
One finalist in the Newcomer of the Year category will attend the Free Press Awards on Wednesday, in The Hague, Netherlands, where he or she will receive a scholarship. The winner in the Most Resilient Journalist category will receive a cash prize of 15 000 euros.
Ufumeli was also recently shortlisted for the International Photography Festival Awards held in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirites in the Current Affairs category of the Xposure.
He was shortlisted for his works depicting violence scenes, among them a picture of riot police officers ruthlessly beating up an apologetic elderly woman at the Harare Magistrates’ Court during National Election Reform Agenda-organised protests.

The pictures went viral on social media and also caught the attention of regional and international news organisations.
His entry was recognised for quality, artistic merit and overall impact. It will be included with accreditation in the Xposure Year Book for 2016.
