Urban grooves sensation, Ex-Q and Ngoni Kambarami, Zimdancehall chanter, Shinsoman, and Afro-jazz musicians, Tariro neGitare and Claire Nyakudyara will rub shoulders on stage with the legendary musician at the event dubbed End Child Marriage Concert, which is being organised by Padare/Enkundleni/Men’s Forum on Gender.

It is expected to attract about 1 000 people.

Gender and Women Affairs minister Nyasha Chikwinya will be the guest of honour.

Padare is spearheading the event on behalf of the Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development ministry, Child Rights Coalition and Women’s Coalition Partners, as well as United Nations Women, United Nations Children’s Fund and United Nations Population Fund.

Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children programmes officer, Maxim Murungweni yesterday said the concert’s main objective was to bring together all stakeholders to deliberate on the causes, effects and finding lasting solutions to ending child marriage in Zimbabwe.

“The concert is on and superstar Oliver Mtukudzi will be leading a troop of other local musicians. The concert seeks to popularise the campaign on ending child marriage in Zimbabwe. A number of civil society organisations will be exhibiting the work they are doing on ending child marriages, while the Child President [Tinaye Mbavari] will deliver a speech on the day,” he said.

Padare acting director, Walter Vengesai said the concert would go a long way in pushing the agenda to end child marriage, a phenomenon that is rife in the country and requires the co-operation of all stakeholders.

“In an effort to address this phenomenon, Padare is organising a concert, which will bring all players together to deliberate on the causes, effects and causes of child marriage. By engaging prominent artistes to denounce the practice and having policymakers speak out against child marriage among other things, I am confident that we will win this war,” he said.
