SEVERAL civic groups have joined the new social movement, This Constitution, Our Constitution, campaign launched last month to press the Zanu PF regime to the country’s governance charter.

The groups include Bulawayo Youths Arise, Youths Advocacy for Reform and Democracy, Active Youths Zimbabwe, Progress Co-ordinating Trust and Zimbabwe Liberation Peace Forum.

“The campaign is a collective voice of civic society organisations merging on a common cause to defend our constitutional values including fostering constitutional awareness,” Abigale Mupambi, an official of the This Constitution, Our Constitution campaign, said.

“We, the people of Zimbabwe, cannot fold our hands when our Constitution is under siege. We are going to take to the streets and make it public that we are not happy with the way our Constitution has been abused by the government.”

Mupambi said they were still negotiating with more like-minded organisations and individuals to be part of the cause before they roll out demonstrations throughout the country.

“Lately, we have been engaging students and the labour unions, our intention is to get the necessary numbers to make bold our voices against the deliberate disregard of the Constitution by the ruling party,” she said.

“Our last hope for survival and refuge rests in the Constitution, hence, the need for all of us to defend its supremacy and have it known by its owners, who are the majority of Zimbabweans.”

Mupambi said they had since acquired about 200 copies of the Constitution from a local organisation.

“We have appealed for more copies and as soon as they reach the number that we want, we will then take to the streets.

“We have seen several freedoms and rights practically slashed without any amendments to the Constitution, with no point of reference to that. This is typical of a jungle rule system taking over our country. We are saying, no. Let’s make the rule of law our standard,”

she said.
