The Sports and Recreation Commission, who are organisers of the event, have started calling for nominations of athletes from sports associations, with the annual ceremony slated for December 14 in the capital.

The nomination process closes on November 8, while the unveiling ceremony will be held two weeks later.

“Currently the SRC is receiving the nomination forms, however, we wish to implore the national sport associations to submit the nominations, since they know exactly, who competed in what competition and the level of the competitions they entered their athletes,” the SRC said.

It is Manyuchi, who looks the front runner to scoop the prestigious Sportsperson of the Year after winning the WBC welterweight silver title by bashing Russian Dmitry Mikhaylenko in May this year.

He followed that up with another feat in his homecoming fight by flooring Columbian opponent, Jose Augustin Julio Feria in a World Boxing Council (WBC) non-title fight at the Harare International Conference Centre earlier this month.

Manyuchi won the Sportsperson of the Year award in 2013, but was surprisingly overlooked last year despite being the overwhelming favourite, having successfully defended his WBC welterweight title by defeating Italian Gianculla Frezza.

The big prize eventually went to bodybuilder, Helen Costa-Sinclair, but Manyuchi’s achievements couldn’t go unnoticed, as he bagged the Sportsman of the Year award.

There are 17 categories up for grabs including the Team of the Year award, which could see the Warriors and their female counterparts, the Mighty Warriors, going toe-to-toe, having both qualified for their respective Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The Mighty Warriors, who will participate at the Awcon, which begins next month in Cameroon, missed out on the award last year despite making history by qualifying for the Rio Olympics – losing to the netball national team. The theme of this year’s awards has been changed from a Heart for Success, to Inspiring Excellence.
