In the 55-page anthology, Muvundusi highlights the socio-economic and political matters that Zimbabwe has had to grapple with since independence.

He said his journalism background had equipped him with an in-depth understanding of the various issues affecting the country.

“This started during my line of duty a few years back when, on a number of occasions, I kept meeting some local writers, who inspired me to write,” he said.

“But it was seasoned author, Ericah Gwetai, who urged me on and made me believe that I could go beyond journalism and be an author as well.”

Muvundusi said The Elusive Thigh Gap was his way of speaking for the voiceless people in matters affecting the country.

“Through this book, I lay bare a number of issues that the country has gone through in the past three decades. I come in as a voice of the voiceless, highlighting the problems that ordinary Zimbabweans have been grappling with over the years. A number of the poems are also inspired by my own personal experiences,” he said.

The author said the title of the book was motivated by women’s quest to have the perfect body which, in most cases, was an elusive desire.

He likened this futile pursuit by women to efforts by opposition parties, civil society and other like-minded groups to unseat Zanu PF, which has been in power since 1980.

Muvundusi said he developed the passion while still in high school and his works were inspired by Dambudzo Marechera and Yvonne Vera (both late).

The book was edited by poet-cum-playwright, Bhekumusa Moyo and published by KoMaseko Publishers.
