City collected four points from FC Platinum in the league this season, including a 2-1 victory at Rufaro Stadium a fortnight ago, a result that wrecked the platinum miners’ chances of winning the league title this season.

Coupled with the 1-1 draw against Ngezi Platinum last weekend, FC Platinum, who were leading the title race then fell to third position, behind Caps United and Highlanders with just three matches before the season ends.

While the Mapeza-coached side still have a chance of winning the league title, it appears the Chibuku Super Cup presents a realistic chance of winning some silverware this season.

Mapeza is reportedly under pressure, as his team continues to lose ground, as the league reaches a thrilling crescendo, with reports suggesting he could be shown the exit door if he fails to win the title.

Therein lies the significance of winning the Chibuku Super Cup.

Insiders said winning the competition, whose rewards also include a ticket to represent the country in the Caf Confederations Cup next year, could help pacify the club’s top hierarchy.

“It’s going to be a tough match because we know they are looking for revenge. We beat them in the league to derail their chances of winning the title. If they lose, it’s most likely that they will finish the season empty-handed. It’s going to be a big match for us and them,” Chunga said.

Mapeza could not be reached for a comment yesterday, but it appears pressure is getting the better of him.

He had a confrontation with match officials following the defeat to City and has since been summoned to appear before the Premier Soccer League disciplinary committee for his troubles.

Chunga travels to Zvishavane without defenders, Diro Nyenye and Arnold Chivheya due to injuries.

The good news in the Chibuku Super Cup’s defending champions’ camp is the return of Ronald Chitiyo, who missed the team’s last league match with a fever.
