An assembly of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM) will be staging a week-long conference starting on Monday, which advocates for the maturity of believers in the body of Christ.

The Maturity Conference will be hosted by Inner City Assembly and runs to September 18 at the Harare Gardens.

Inner City Assembly leader, Caesar Magwentshu told NewsDay yesterday the conference was aimed at conscientising the genuine church of Jesus that the only way to have a healthy church and its leadership that will be of service and relevance to the social, political, academic and business world, was growing and maturing believers to Christ’s likeness.

This would in turn culminate into servanthood and stewardship of resources, which God has put at our disposal, he said.

Magwentshu said, while more than half of the people who belonged to a church were Christians, there would never be a sense of responsibility to nation-building if they were immature.

“This goes beyond building sanctuaries and pioneering ministries that only address issues of personal wealth, prosperity and self-aggrandisement. This also goes beyond advertising of preachers as workers of questionable miracles, which makes miracles more of an idol to believers than the ultimate focus on Christ,” he said.

“Due to immaturity, believers migrate from church to church, ministry to ministry in search of breakthroughs, but it will be a miracle for a tree to constantly uproot itself from a drought-stricken region and relocate to a fair weather-conditioned region. Immaturity causes believers to escape trials and create quick-fix solutions with ultimate negative impacts.”

Magwentshu said it was due to immaturity that “we have leadership wrangles and sex scandals in some ministries”. He said the problem with today’s church was not the devil or demons — because Jesus dealt with the devil 2 000 years ago and disarmed all principalities and powers, but lack of spiritual maturity and knowledge of God’s word.

“It is the immature believer that is manipulated and promised that they can become what God can never do with that kind of person,” he said.

Speakers at the conference include AFM secretary-general, Amon Madawo, Never Muparutsa (Pentecostal Assemblies of Zimbabwe), Amon Chinyemba (AFM Harare East province), Joseph Ponda (AFM Harare West) and Martin Mwirigi from Kenya.
