The event was graced by several opposition politicians, among them Zapu leader, Dumiso Dabengwa, and MDC-T and ZimPF representatives.

PDP spokesperson, Jacob Mafume described the celebrations as a success, despite earlier attempts by police to ban the event.

“We decided to hold the celebrations in Bulawayo at White City Stadium. The State had banned and unbanned the celebrations and then tried to intimidate people. We need to remain resolute in our chase for real democracy for the people, a democracy that will bring economic benefits and real solutions,” he said.

“We had invited all political parties and around 8 000 to 10 000 people attended.”

PDP secretary-general, Gorden Moyo said it was time for the opposition to unite and democratically push President Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF regime out of power.

Speaking at the event, PDP vice-president, Samuel Sipepa Nkomo said: “God is not happy about the plight of Zimbabweans. Mugabe has systematically destroyed the country.”
