The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) has released the June Ordinary and Advanced level results, which show a pass rate of 46,46% amid a declining number of candidates compared to previous years.

Zimsec director, Esau Nhandara said the number of students who sat for ‘O’ level June exams dropped by 19,4% from 81 083 recorded in 2015 to 65 380.
“The number of candidates, who sat for five or more subjects was 2 391, which is 3,6% of the total candidature of 65 380. The remainder, 62 989 (96,3%) sat for four or fewer subjects,” he said.
Zimsec said of the 2 391 who sat for more than five subjects, 668 were from the formal school system, with 311 of them passing with grade C or better, representing a pass rate of 46,56%.
“The private candidates, who sat for five subjects or more were 1 723 and of these passed with grade C or better, giving a percentage pass rate of 9,75%,” Nhandara said in a statement.
Turning to A level results, a total of 4 007 students sat for the June exams compared to 4 086 for 2015, a decline of 1,9%.

Nhandara said the total number of students, who sat for two or more subjects, was 1 844, which is 46% of the total candidature.
“The percentage pass rate for the school candidates, who wrote two or more subjects is 85,13% and 60,8% for private candidates,” he stated.
Normally, June exams are meant for candidates, who need to supplement their previous efforts and have a complete certificate with five subjects at grade C or better.
But at times, school students participate.
Zimsec said those who wrote the examinations could start collecting results from yesterday at their examination centres.
