Zifa quells refs’ saga

Sport
Zifa has appointed new standing committees in a bid to ensure the smooth running of football in the country. The absence of the organs, particularly the referees committee, had threatened to put the local leagues into disarray as clubs complained about the alleged biased appointment of referees.

Castle Lager Premier Soccer League sides, Caps United and Chicken Inn, complained about the alleged partial appointment of referees a couple of weeks ago.

Zifa boss Phillip Chiyangwa will head the Referees Committee, with former referee Gladmore Muzambi deputising him. Kainos Mavhunda, Japhet Mufiri, Thabani Mkanjo and Musa Ntonga form the rest of the committee.

The committee reserves the right to appoint match officials for all leagues under Zifa’s jurisdiction.

Chicken Inn raised a red flag over the appointment of referees after their match against FC Platinum in which they lost 1-0. They alleged Thomas Masaa, who was the centre man, was biased against their team.

Caps United also complained that Thabani Bamala officiated in all their matches each time they travelled to Bulawayo.

The Premier Soccer League had taken over the appointment of referees after the failed dissolution of Zifa. Other organs include the Technical Development Committee, which is led by Zifa vice-president Omega Sibanda assisted by vice-chairman and former Warriors and Zimbabwe Saints coach Gibson Homela, Simba Wisdom, Tumediso Ndlovu, Nelson Matongorere, Bheki Nyoni, and ex-Mighty Warriors coach Rosemary Mugadza.

An as-yet-to-be-appointed technical director will be part of that committee.

The Finance Committee is led by Zifa board member Philemon Machana with Brighton Malandule, Kuziwa Nyabeza, Chicken Inn chairman Lifa Ncube and Gilbert Saika.

Zifa vice-chairman, Sibanda leads four committees that include High Performance, Human Resources, Adhoc Disciplinary and the Technical Development organs.

Former Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambwa, who is now heading the technical team at ZPC Kariba, bounced into the structures as a member of the High Performance Committee.

Chicken Inn coach, Rahman Gumbo, who is also a former Warriors coach, and Harare City coach Moses Chunga are also part of the same committee.
