The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has approached the High Court seeking to compel the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (Zimta) to pay monthly outstanding subscriptions of over $288 000, which have accrued since 2014.

The umbrella labour body said the teachers’ representative body was making its operations difficult by not submitting its monthly dues in terms of the requirements and agreements which the parties entered into upon registration.

“The plaintiff (ZCTU) is a registered entity to which a number of trade unions belong and to which the defendant (Zimta) is also a party,” the workers’ union said in its declaration.

“The defendant is obliged in terms of the plaintiff’s constitution to pay its dues to the plaintiff. As a result of its failure to pay dues from March 2014 to June 2016, the defendant is now owing the plaintiff a total of $288 495,50.

“The amount being claimed is broken down as follows: March 2014 to December 2014 a total of $108 498,20, January 2015 to December 2015 a total of $119 998,20, and January 2016 to June 2016 a total of $59 999,10.”

ZCTU further said Zimta’s attitude of refusing to pay the dues was making it difficult for the workers’ union to carry out its obligations in terms of its constitution. “Despite demand, the defendant has neglected, refused or failed to pay the said amount and no explanation whatsoever has been proffered as defendant has not been responding to any correspondences over the issue,” ZCTU said.

“The plaintiff has been left with no option, but to approach this honourable court for relief.”

Zimta has since entered an appearance to defend notice and is geared to defend the claim as and when the matter would be set down for hearing.
