Trevor Matanhire (41) and Learnmore Monera (30) had initially denied the charge.

Matanhire told trial magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti that he only got involved after Monera hired him to deliver the documents to his clients in Chitungwiza.

But, Monera distanced himself from the documents, saying Matanhire should be held accountable since they were recovered from his vehicle.

When Matanhire was asked if he had anything to say to the court, he pleaded for the court’s mercy.

When Muchuchuti asked if he was now pleading guilty to the offence, Matanhire quickly realised that he had blundered. He then said he only wanted the court to understand him.

Allegations are that on February 16 this year, police received information that there was an Astra Opel vehicle that was moving around the Highfield area carrying fake documents.

Police officers allegedly intercepted the vehicle and Matanhire admitted that it was his.

The State alleges the police officers searched the vehicle and recovered fake certificate of competence in respect of Mukuna Edwin Farai stashed in between front seats.

Matanhire was allegedly escorted to Machipisa Police Station where detectives allegedly recovered a folder containing two fake driver’s licence discs in the name of Wadzanai Tinashe and Kechi Amon Tinashe, one fake ‘O’ Level certificate for Matare Tapiwa, a fake national diploma for Michael Tawanda Jinga, a fake national diploma in hotel and catering for Tafadzwa Chaparadza, three fake learner’s licences for Mukuna Edwin Fadzi, Chivhima Thomas and Felistas Matizanadzo, two fake Central Vehicle Registry certificates for Chiyangwa Givemore and Chipara Benzil.

Upon further enquiries, Matanhire implicated Monera, leading to his arrest. The trial continues today with Progress Mavengamoyo appearing for the State.
