Following the recent release of her new album, Kwayedza, Samkange told NewsDay yesterday that the album was “prophetic” in that although she wrote the songs some time back, they speak to what was happening now.

“Kwayedza is spiritually-linked, yes, and it’s like a prophetic album because when I composed that song, I never really thought it would speak to people’s lives and situations this time of the year,” she said.

“It is extra talent when you get to compose music and (realise) you are touching people’s lives. That is where the spiritual therapy and journey comes in. I do therapy through my music after I recently found out that I have another talent of spiritual therapy.”

Samkange said her spiritual ability to nurture people’s lives was a God-given talent, which she discovered after going away to reflect on herself and found her purpose.

She said she has embarked on the spiritual journey to be closer to her Creator and claimed the transition had helped to grow her brand.

“The transition has really worked in favour of the MaNgwenya brand in a very positive way and I have gotten more recognition and a larger fan base who appreciate my singing career. To me, that is positive to the Mangwenya brand,” she said.

After discarding urban grooves, Samkange adopted “mature traditional music” with a fusion of mbira, she said, adding that MaNgwenya was her totem, which inspired her to represent Zimbabwean culture.

In July last year, Samkange was on record saying MaNgwenya was an alter ego that possessed her when on stage the same way United States songstress Beyoncé Knowles has confessed that she turned into “Sasha Fierce” when on stage.
