AMHVoices: Opposition coalition will end Zanu PF’s misrule

The problem has been in its collective failure to come together. It’s failure to realise that there is power in numbers.

Gweru was the place to be this weekend. A political event, which most people expected, took place. Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) leader, Joice Mujuru and her lieutenants attended a Movement for Democratic Change demonstration led by MDC-T president, Morgan Tsvangirai.

People have always called for such unity. They expect more to happen. It’s not enough. What we want to see is a political rainbow coalition, which will stop even a political hurricane. The opposition have got a lot of talented and experienced people to finish off Zanu PF.

The problem has been in its collective failure to come together. It’s failure to realise that there is power in numbers. Its failure to put national interests ahead of party and personal interests.

The Gweru event of August 13, seems to confirm that political leaders are realising that united we stand, divided we fall.

People have suffered for a very long time mostly because of Zanu PF, which over the years manipulated the fragmented opposition.

It will be hard to rig if the election is a two-people race. The votes won’t be split. Most people will have a good reason to vote for a serious opposition made up of diverse individuals, with a lot of potential to solve the country’s economic and political challenges.

Next time Zimbabweans expect to see all the famous opposition leaders sharing the same stage and political pulpit.

Who can resist a political line up that includes Mujuru, Tsvangirai, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube and Simba Makoni fighting in one corner.

That will be the most telling development in our lifetime. Zanu PF will be already defeated even before polling day. The only thing President Robert Mugabe dreads at the moment is a coalition of opposition parties before the 2018 polls. He knows that his divided and faction-ridden party will not win against that.

While the opposition leaders are working towards working with each other, the opposition grassroots must start doing the same. The grassroots is where the battles will be fought.

Unity at polling station and village level will enhance security of the vote and give confidence to the povo aiming to kick Zanu PF out of power.

Zanu PF knows its days in power are numbered. Definitely no-one in the ruling party will win the coming poll against a coalition opposition Let us finish it!
