Police heavy-handedness uncalled for

Opinion & Analysis
The MDC-T youth assembly condemns, in the strongest of terms, the continued harassment of citizens as they take on the regime of President Robert Mugabe. The recent victimisation of Zimbabweans cannot go unchallenged and it in this regard that the MDC-T youth assembly will not fold its hands.

The MDC-T youth assembly, under its flagship #MyZimbabwe campaign, shall be embarking on a series of protests specifically against police brutality. We will not stop until the police come over to the side of the oppressed majority. We are equally engaging in a name-and-shame campaign where we want all these rogue elements harassing innocent citizens to be exposed.

We are more than ready to face the regime of Mugabe, which we are certain is about to fall. The antics of Mugabe, Constantino Chiwenga and Augustine Chihuri to intimidate and silence the people of Zimbabwe will come to naught as the power of a determined people cannot be broken. All dictators worldwide have at one time resorted to these desperate attempts to cling on to power, but they have ultimately fallen. Mugabe’s dictatorship is no exception. We are calling upon Mugabe to make a dignified exit from the political scene lest he will be chased away by angry citizens of this country.

The police are supposed to be an institution that protects all people regardless of their political affiliation. We can never allow a situation where the police force allows the Zanu PF youth league to demonstrate when and as they want, but are quick to descend heavily on any other group of people that decides to demonstrate. This country, this Zimbabwe belongs to all of us and we will not allow a few bad people in the police to portray the whole police force as a partisan institution.

There shall come a time in the fight against a dictatorship where instruments of State repression have to choose to either stand with a falling dictator or come to the side of the masses and we believe that we have reached that time as a country where the police and other security forces have to choose who to stand with, lest they are found on the wrong side of the equation.

The Zimbabwe which Josiah Tongogara, Solomon Mujuru, Lookout Masuku and Joshua Nkomo fought for is the Zimbabwe we now need to rescue from an insensitive and clueless government. Real war veterans fought for a Zimbabwe where everyone is free to pursue any opportunity they want and to associate with whoever they want to. We will not sit back while civil servant George Charamba and Mugabe attempt to rewrite the narrative of why the liberation war of this country was fought.

We have to feel secure as a people in this independent Zimbabwe and we shall do our part as the young people of this country to ensure that no one will ever suppress, harass or intimidate any other person in this country. This Zimbabwe is my Zimbabwe, it’s your Zimbabwe, let’s all play our part in dismantling the dictatorship of Mugabe.

We are urging all Zimbabweans to resist being stripped of our identity as Zimbabweans by this clueless regime, we deserve better as a country, we deserve better as a people, we deserve a better Zimbabwe.
