TWO more members of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZNLWVA) were arrested yesterday, as the State intensified its clampdown on suspected authors of a communiqué by former fighters, which denounced President Robert Mugabe as a dictator and called on him to step down.

ZNLWVA vice-chairman, Headman Moyo and the association’s Harare executive member, Wayne Bhila were arrested after they handed over themselves at Harare Central Police Station in the company of their lawyers. This followed Tuesday’s arrest of war veterans’ secretary-general, Victor Matemadanda, who was picked up as he left the courtroom, where the association’s spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya was being charged for allegedly undermining President Robert Mugabe through the communiqué.
Mahiya was on Tuesday released on $300 bail.
The war veterans’ lawyer, Shingi Mutumbwa, told NewsDay yesterday that Moyo and Bhila were likely to be brought to court today facing charges of undermining the President.
“We went to Harare Central Police Station with Headman Moyo and Wayne Bhila and they have been charged. Indications are that they will be detained overnight and go to court tomorrow,” he said.
Prominent human rights defender, Beatrice Mtetwa is also part of the war veterans’ legal team.
The issue of the communiqué is also expected to be part of the agenda at the Zanu PF politburo meeting today.
