The potentially explosive concert is a preliminary event to search for representatives, who will then battle for honours to participate at the King and Queen of Dancehall gig set for December at a yet to be named venue.

Mbare, one of the oldest residential suburbs in the country, is the current title holder after the trio of Seh Calaz, Kinnah and Soul Jah Love shrugged off competition from artistes from other suburbs to pocket the R17 500 that was up for grabs.

Producers will also clash for honours in the riddim battle, while talented dancers will square off in the clucks competition at the concert.

The top three in the main categories will receive $500, $250 and $100, respectively and a recording contract for their efforts.

Speaking to NewsDay yesterday, concert organiser, Barbra Chikosi of Red Rose Entertainment, said unheralded and popular dancehall chanters had registered for the clash.

“We have an overwhelming response from both rising and popular artistes, with about 160 of them having registered for the event. Our appeal, to both the artistes and fans, is for a violent-free gig,” she said.

“All the participating artistes should make sure the show remains a lyrical and musical confrontation and nothing personal that will go off stage.”

Chikosi said United Kingdom-based Zimbabwean wheel spinner, Lady Bimma has confirmed her attendance and will share the stage with the locally-based Immortal Movement pair of Gary B and Templeman and Legendary Sounds.

Dadza D and Hwindi President will introduce raw talent representing Chitungwiza, Maggikal has registered to have Highfield represented, while Dobba Don will be among the Ruwa representatives.

Mallon Tee, JMP, Critical Beatz, Cashlibs, Fire King, Zayan Empire and Dollar Gettaz among others have registered in the producer’s category.

Chikosi said they have included the producers’ category, as they have a special role, despite working behind the scenes for the success of these artistes.

“It is the complementary work between the guys behind the scenes, the producers, that has seen several artistes breaking boundaries and becoming household names on the showbiz scene,” she said.

“The registration process is still open and artistes, who are willing to participate at the concert, can get registration forms at studios in their neighbourhoods’ and all Red Rose salons, but payment of the registration fee of $5 should only be done at Red Rose Entertainment offices.”
