Vengai Mpofu (42) of Mt Hampden was allegedly caught red-handed by neighbours who gathered around the house with some seeking to beat him up.

Magistrate Tendai Mahwe denied Mpofu bail and advised him to apply for such at the High Court.

He was charged with attempted murder and will be back in court on July 19 pending finalisation of his case.

According to the State, Mpofu was having an affair with an unidentified married woman and it became known in the neighbourhood. On the day in question neighbours spotted the lovebirds going to the woman’s house after her husband had left for work.

The neighbours then tipped off the husband, who returned and stormed into the room while Mpofu was making love to his wife.

Mpofu allegedly took a small axe that was in the room and struck one of the neighbours who were present before he tried to escape. He was, however, overpowered by the angry mob which later handed him over to the police.

In a separate case, five security guards — Maxwell Rafamoyo (31), Felix Muteve (26), Sam Marange (52), Goodman Muteve (24) and Simbarashe Muteve (29) — appeared before the same court on murder charges.

The five landed themselves in the dock for fatally beating a suspected intruder whom they spotted roaming in the premises of a car park they manned in Kuwadzana 5.

The court heard they used wood blocks to attack him and left him for dead.

The now deceased was rushed to hospital and died on admission due to sustained injuries. Mahwe advised Rafamoyo and his alleged accomplices to approach the High Court for bail considerations.

They will be back in the dock on July 19.
