Mare told NewsDay, in a wide-ranging interview yesterday, that her early childhood made her feel unworthy and she appreciated that there were more women going through similar abuse.

Her desire, she said, was to encourage them through the song, to fight on to the end until they achieve their victory.

“The song Moto Ngaubvire was inspired partly by that, growing up, life was not always smooth. Luckily for me, I had a supportive family that made me see that I was worthy,” she said.

“I want girls out there to know and appreciate that nothing comes without a fight and hard work, so in some way, honestly, I would say that I am inspired by the song as well.”

Mare said she released the song with the aid of the British Council, with the aim of empowering young girls, who faced a lot of negativity and had to deal with challenges such as rape and early marriages.

“I wanted to give them something that reminded them that they are an important, no matter the phases they are going through in life. Girls do not have to be abused because of dependence,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mare said she was currently working on videos for her album, Shinga, while working on her next album.

She said she was due to travel to the United States of America and South Africa on tour.

Mare rose to national stardom in 2010, when she released her second album, Summer of Love.
