Tawanda Philip Mathe was not asked to plead when he appeared before provincial magistrate Tendai Mahwe and was granted $50 bail.

Allegations against Mathe are that on July 24 he invited the friend for a drink at Mereki shops in Warren Park and promised to cater for his transport fare, since the friend had said he did not have money.

The State alleges, the complainant went to Mereki shops to meet Mathe and the two drank beer until around 10pm. The complainant then told Mathe he wanted to go home, but the accused told him he had arranged a place to sleep at a friend’s house and he agreed.

The State further alleges the two proceeded to a house owned by someone identified only as Thulani, where they slept in the same room, but the complainant was shocked to wake up at around 10am the following day to discover his pair of trousers and underwear had been pulled down to his knees.

It is alleged when the complainant tried to stand up, he felt some pain in his back and asked the two who had sexually abused him, but Mathe and Thulani laughed. Mathe then admitted to sodomising him.

The State alleges when the complainant said he was going to report the matter, Mathe panicked and transferred $100 into his EcoCash account, pleading with him not to report.

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old Wedza man was yesterday slapped with a six-year jail term by regional magistrate, Noel Mupeiwa after being convicted of attempting to kill a taxi driver he had hired.

Blessing Mukanda will serve an effective three-year jail term after half the sentence was suspended on condition of good behaviour.

According to the State, on May 4 this year at around 9pm, Mukanda hired Joseph Mutonhodza from the city centre to Mabelreign.

The court heard Mukanda instructed Mutonhodza to reduce speed, as they neared the destination, but suddenly struck him with an axe on the back of his head.

Mutonhodza was later rescued by people from the neighbourhood after raising alarm.

As Mukanda fled the scene, he left his national identity card, photos, a cellphone and two bags with clothing items, which led to his arrest.
