Archibold Chimhau was arrested on July 11 this year after being implicated in the assault of Obey Murenge leading to his death.

In his bail application, Chimhau claimed that he had no knowledge of the cause of Murenge’s death since the post-mortem, which must establish the cause, has not yet been done and brought to court.

Chimhau further distanced himself from the offence, saying no witnesses could confirm that he was at the scene of the incident. According to the State, sometime in January this year Murenge borrowed kachasu (homemade alcoholic drink) worth $6 from shebeen owner, Anna Nelson of Overspill Epworth, who is also a suspect in the matter.

The State alleged that five months later, Nelson approached Murenge demanding her money.

Murenge then opted to offset the debt with his tattered pair of shoes.

This allegedly angered Nelson who then teamed up with her son Naison and a shebeen client identified as Brian Makeleni and assaulted Murenge with an unknown blunt object on the head and all over the body.

As a result, Murenge sustained internal injuries.

Makeleni, who was renting at the same house with Murenge later informed the deceased’s father Peter Murenge that his son had been assaulted for failing to pay a $6 debt.

Murenge was briefly hospitalised and discharged, but later succumbed to the assault injuries on July 5.
