HARARE mayor Bernard Manyenyeni, who was arrested on Wednesday on criminal abuse of office charges, yesterday failed to appear in court and spent another night in police cells as the State was reportedly preparing more charges against him.

His lawyer, Lovemore Madhuku, said Manyenyeni would be in court today answering to charges related to the appointment of suspended town clerk, James Mushore. Madhuku described the delay in bringing his client to court as an “unjustified pre-appearance punishment”.
“The reason for the delay is because of the unfortunate state of minds. It is because of people who think that the powers they have to arrest people can be used for any purpose,” he said.
“That’s unfortunate and unacceptable, but Manyenyeni has a high esteem and is ready to face the crime.”
Manyenyeni was picked up by officials from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission shortly after the High Court overturned his suspension by Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere.
