It is suspected that three women, aged 61, 35 and 32, who were in a polygamous marriage, shared sour milk which had been mixed with dried vegetables and served for supper together with sadza.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said it was while eating the food that eight family members started complaining of stomach pains and diarrhoea, except for one child who had not eaten the relish.

Police named the five deceased as Easther Kunguli (70), Beauty (4) and Sylvia Baloyi (4), Tafadzwa (7) and Takudzwa Pote (4).

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Chiredzi District Hospital for post-mortem.

Charamba said two other family members who survived the poisoning had been admitted at the same hospital.

She said the police were still awaiting the post-mortem results to ascertain the actual cause of the deaths.
