DIRECTOR of Yamurai Arts production Raphel Yobe said artists play a pivotal role in expressing issues that affect society and they must be respected for that cause in their communities.

Speaking to NewsDay on the sidelines of a gender responsiveness in public service delivery programme hosted by Action Aid last week, Yobe said artistes articulate people’s voices and convey, messages to the intended audience in an artistic way that makes it easier for them to understand particular issues.
“Artistes play an active role in the day-to-day issues in the society, although sometimes the world is adamant in embracing their role as sometimes they are ignored,” he said.
“They (artistes) are looked down upon and are never given much respect in society as most people do not understand their important role in society that it is equally important as any other professions.”
He bemoaned several factors, among them lack of sponsorship and funds, that he said were crippling the progress of the arts industry and the community as a whole which need to be addressed.
“Non-governmental organisations should engage artistes to help them convey issues of relevance such as public service delivery and at the same time audiences should also draw lessons to the different forms of art they are exposed to be it drama or poetry” he said.
