Gallery director, Helen Teede, told NewsDay, on the sidelines of the exhibition that they were pleased with the turnout.

“The opening day of the exhibition was great, as more than 150 people attended. The exhibition was well-received by the audience and we have received positive feedback,” she said.

Through the exhibition, Starling sought to explore the reality that birth and death were common to all things.

“In Rest Until exhibition the artist explored the land, the unborn, personal loss, memory, the spirit and the journey to renewal within the turbulent past and seemingly tumultuous future of Zimbabwe,” she said.

Feede said the gallery was looking forward to hosting their next exhibition towards the end of July, where a conceptual artist, Kombo Chapfika, will exhibit his art work.

Starling was born in Bulawayo, where he maintains his full time darkroom and studio. He works predominantly with traditional black and white photographic techniques and tools. His work is highly conceptual, personal and fuelled by curiosity.

Both mysterious and romantic, the work explores themes of mortality and rebirth, memory along with its connection to photography, the history of place and identity within post-colonial society. Starling’s work is held in many private collections around the world and he has exhibited in various group shows in Zimbabwe.
