HARARE City Football Club has roped in Moses Chunga as the new head coach to replace Taurai Mangwiro, who was sacked after a poor start to the new season.

Chunga, who is set to be unveiled by the club this morning, will inherit Mangwiro’s backroom staff. Club secretary-general, Mathew Marara announced the new developments yesterday.

“We had an executive meeting today (yesterday), where we agreed to part ways with head coach, Taurai Mangwiro. We were not happy with the team’s performance and the results, so we agreed to part ways amicably and he was also in agreement that the results were not coming,” he said.

Mangwiro had been given a top-three finish as the target, but Marara said they had axed the former Caps United coach after realising he would not be able to meet that goal.

“At the rate which he was going, at 33% success rate, we felt he was going to miss the target,” he said.

Mangwiro has been dismissed with City in 10th position on the log standings with eight points from eight matches, and two points above the relegation zone, following a dismal run, where the team has recorded just two wins, three losses and three draws.

The well-sponsored side was also eliminated from the Caf Confederations Cup in the first round. Marara believes Chunga will move them out of their current quagmire.

“We believe we made the right decision. Considering our focus on junior development, we think Chunga, who has done well in that aspect before as shown by his success with the ‘Kidznet’ at Dynamos, is the right man,” he said.

Mangwiro, who joined the side in 2014, becomes the third man in the league to be shown the exit door early in the season after Mutare City’s Kennedy Kachara and Jorge Paulo Silva, who was fired at Dynamos for similar reasons.
