The college’s executive director, Rachel Jera-Chigwanda told NewsDay they needed about $20 000 to finance the construction of a precast wall and a carport at the institution.

“We are extending our begging bowl to well-wishers, as we want to improve our security at Zimbabwe College of Music, by removing the old fence and replacing it with a precast wall, and as a way of showing our commitment towards the project, we have organised a music fundraising concert,” she said.

Jera-Chigwanda said they were looking forward to a successful concert and called on music fans, well-wishers and corporates to support them.

ZCM, which was established in 1948, is the oldest formal music training institution in the country.

ZCM offers diversified programmes, with a vision to be the most sought-after institution in training and developing musical arts professionals in Africa.

Over the years, many graduates have been churned out and some are working professionally in the academia, while others have pursued music administration and performance as careers.

Some of the most notable names from the ZCM graduates include former Harare International Festival of the Arts director Manuel Bagorro, James Chimombe and Louis Mhlanga.
