His song Ebenezer-Tiri Munyasha, a collaborative effort with several gospel acts, won in the Best Collaboration category.

Chivaviro, who was also a guest performer at the glamorous awards ceremony, told NewsDay yesterday he was overwhelmed by his latest achievement.

“Being nominated for two awards is one level, but winning one of them, for us, we say it is a higher level. By God’s grace, Ebenezer has surpassed our expectations. This award is for Zimbabwe and Ebenezer continues to fly-high,” he said.

“It is ironic that we never received any collaboration recognition or nomination at all from major Zimbabwe awards for the song. But God has his own ways, we give him all the glory.”

Chivaviro was also nominated for the Best Traditional Song category alongside Nigeria’s Enkay, Shongwe and Khupuka (Swaziland) and Worship House (South Africa) with Shongwe emerging the winner.

Local gospel musicians who graced the event include Rumbidzai Zvirikuzhe, Tatenda Mahachi and Sandra Chirenje.

South Africa’s Rebecca Malope won the Best Female artiste award, while Nigeria’s Uche won in the Best Song category.

Chivaviro shrugged off competition from local songstress and Celebration Church senior pastor, Bonnie Deuschle, Wumi and Victizzle (Nigeria) and Kenya’s Benachi and Kabere.

The awards are the brainchild of South African public relations and marketing guru, Zanele Mbokazi, who founded World Gospel Powerhouse, which also produces the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards.

The Tagma awards are aimed at honouring African gospel music artistes, developing gospel talent and exposing the underdogs in the gospel music industry to the world.
