National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident which happened at around 7pm.

“On approaching the 51km peg, the driver of the Hino truck encroached into the lane of oncoming vehicles resulting in a head-on collision with the Toyota Hiace,” Charamba said yesterday.

“Twelve people died on the spot whilst the other three died on admission to Chitungwiza Central Hospital.”

Six other people were rushed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were also taken to the same hospital for postmortem.

“The ZRP is deeply concerned with the loss of lives through road accidents. We are urging motorists to avoid speeding and to exercise caution when travelling. All drivers should take note that night driving is risky due to poor visibility which is coupled by narrow roads and potholes,” Charamba said.

She also cautioned motorists against driving with defective lights at night as well as speeding on bad roads.

Charamba said it was better for motorists to plan their journeys on time to curtail accidents and avoid driving at night at all costs.

“Farmers should not move at night with their produce as they risk their lives. We encourage members of the public to carry their identity cards to assist police in the identification process in the event of a road accident,” she said.

The police also appealed to people missing their relatives to proceed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital and assist in identifying 11 bodies that are yet to be identified.
