A ZIMBABWE National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) delegation is set to attend the China-Africa Small to Medium Enterprise convention in Shanghai from June 7 to 10, where it is expecting to seal trade and investment deals.

The visit comes as Zimbabwe is under scrutiny as relations between the two countries seem to be cooling down after the African country recently revoked licences of diamond mining firms operating in Chiadzwa, among them two Chinese companies, Jinan and Ainjin.
ZNCC chief executive officer, Christopher Mugaga told NewsDay yesterday that the delegation will only represent the interests of the private sector and not government.
“We will be going with SMEs to create business-to-business linkages, new business opportunities and build new markets,” he said.
ZNCC is looking to tap into China’s small to medium enterprise market that contributes 60% of that country’s gross domestic product, according to a 2014 World Trade Organisation report.
The China-Africa SMEs Convention is being organised by the Shanghai City government.

One prominent Chinese businessman said they were approaching trade and investment deals with Zimbabwe in “a cautious way”.
According to an agreement between Zimbabwe and China, on business dealings between the two countries that went into force on March 1, 1998, any dispute was to be settled by consultation through diplomatic channels.
