GWERU socialite and music promoter, Easu Hondora and his colleague, Proud Mhaka, who were last week convicted on robbery charges, and sentenced to an effective six months in prison each, successfully contested the verdict on Friday.

The duo were accused of robbing a city businessman of $ 1 300 and a Samsung Galaxy cellphone in January this year.
Hondora and Mhaka, who were represented by Tonderai Hitere, were granted $100 bail pending appeal against both conviction and sentence at the High Court.
The State’s case was that Hondora (33) and Mhaka (29) robbed Robson Vunganai (29), the chief executive officer of Mushmo Land investment Trust, of cash and a mobile phone. Last week, Gweru magistrate Judith Taruvinga sentenced the duo to 12 months in prison each, but suspended three months on condition of good behaviour. A further three months were suspended on condition that each pays $950 restitution to the complainant.
The two had denied the charges, saying Vunganai owed Hondora $120 and when they approached him he paid, but were later surprised when he later made a report to police for robbery.
The State’s case was that on January 9 at around 1pm, Vunganai of Southview Extension, parked his car along Fifth Street in the city centre, where the pair blocked his vehicle. They disembarked from their car and Mhaka opened Vunganai’s car door and grabbed him by the collar, before Hondora joined in the scuffle and demanded his money from Vunganai. Vunganai told them he had no money, but that his friend was going to send him some cash.
Hondora started searching the complainant’s pockets and took $ 1 300 and a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge before they drove away.
