NewsDay Comment

Lumumba is beginning to see what most Zimbabweans have been saying about the party and each time they voiced their concerns they were accused of either being Western sponsored or anarchists.

The issues Lumumba raises are nothing new and Zimbabweans have been saying this for the best part of four decades, but their concerns have fallen on deaf ears, with Zanu PF continuing to stifle independent thought and voices. It is not lost on us that Lumumba is bitter because he was fired and his elaborate videos may be nothing more than a case of sour grapes and some may argue he deserves no sympathy.

However, his frustrations should serve to warn his former colleagues in Zanu PF that the party is founded and continues to survive by trampling on people’s freedoms and quashing the aspirations of Zimbabweans, particularly the youth – often used as fodder in mindless violence and bloodletting.

Lumumba is not a poster-boy for democracy, accountability and good governance, in fact, he probably represents the opposite, but his ranting has revealed some rot, particularly at the Youth ministry headed by President Robert Mugabe’s nephew, Patrick Zhuwao.

It has emerged Zhuwao hired a consultancy company in the murkiest of deals, something that would not have been known had Lumumba not been fired.

Thus, we pray that more people in Zanu PF can be open about the nature of members’ deals and how they have affected the public purse.

Mugabe has led the chorus in attacking the West for what he deems evil sanctions, but he is silent on the evil corruption being wrought on Zimbabweans by his party and more importantly, by someone close to him. As long as Mugabe does not act, censure or fire the likes of Zhuwao, then the buck stops with him and Zimbabweans deserve answers.

Mugabe should not be insulating corrupt people and encouraging vice, as this is worse than any sanctions the West can ever impose on Zimbabweans.

We hope Lumumba’s videos, no matter how puerile and egotist, can help inspire other Zimbabweans, within and without Zanu PF, to speak out and demand an end to this evil system that continues to choke the life out of the country. Zimbabwe’s hope lies in honesty, truthfulness and hard work, which have been eroded by some of our leaders who have inculcated a culture of laziness, avarice and corruption and the future can only be safeguarded by youth who are willing to take the bull by the scruff of the neck.

Zanu PF – in its current form – is yesterday’s party and if the youth do not speak out now, the ruling party will drag the country into an abyss and it will take a lifetime to bring back the nation from that bottomless pit.
