The march is widely believed to be a ploy by the First Lady Grace Mugabe-linked G40 faction in Zanu PF to outwit the rival Team Lacoste, reportedly loyal to Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Zanu PF youth league secretary Kudzai Chipanga yesterday said Mugabe was expected to address the marchers. “The march is a way of reaffirming our support to President Mugabe and endorse his candidature in the 2018 harmonised elections,” he said.

Chipanga said the party’s main wing, women’s league, war veterans and war collaborators, student bodies and churches were currently busy mobilising people for the march.

The youth league leadership has a frosty relationship with some of the affiliate organisations, particularly war veterans, whom Chipanga has attacked in the past, accusing them of denigrating the First Family.
