In an interview with NewsDay yesterday, Hifa associate executive director Tafadzwa Simba said Portuguese band HMB will open the Harare Theatre Season that roars to life from May 12 and ends on May 15 as part of their long series of events under the new format of hosting the festival.

“As part of our long series of events where we will be focusing on different genres each month, this month we are giving prominence to theatre and participating artistes are drawn from Zimbabwe who include The Pianist, and abroad with a mix of other genres spicing up the thespian celebration,” Simba said.

“Portuguese band HMB will open the Harare Theatre Season on Thursday 12 May at 7pm at Reps Theatre. The group’s appearance at the event is courtesy of the Embassy of Portugal in Harare.”

Simba said there would also be a comic flavour to the event with local stand-up comedians sharing the stage with colleagues from South Africa. “Comedy has grown in leaps and bounds in Zimbabwe of late. It has received regular slots at Hifa and audiences are sure to once again enjoy witty social commentary at its best,” he said.

“Plays from abroad include Joyced and The Olive Tree which came to Harare from Ireland courtesy of Culture Ireland and the Mashonaland Irish Association.”

He said dance theatre will also be in the mix with Zimbabwean dance groups Tumbuka and AfriKera Arts Trust collaborating with Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) having been working together for some weeks in collaborative creative workshops in preparation of the Harare Theatre Season.

“Although Hifa will be focusing on one main genre at a time, the eclectic nature of the festival will be seen throughout its events. With the Harare Theatre Season, there will also be music as part of the programme,” Simba said.

He said tickets of the events will be available at Reps Theatre through its spotlight ticketing system.
