The airline has been operating without a substantive CEO since January 2011 after Peter Chikumba decided not to renew his contract, becoming the first head of a parastatal to take that route.

Edmund Makona has been the acting CEO since 2013. Before then, Innocent Mavhunga had been heading the organisation in an acting capacity since 2011 before he was shipped out in 2013.

In a notice on Sunday, Air Zim said it was looking for a visionary strategist and leader “who demonstrates a professional and flexible leadership style”.

The candidate, it said, should have an ability to develop, implement and evaluate turnaround strategies including managing workloads and resources and be able to align organisational strategies, with stakeholder groups with include government and government institutions.

The ideal candidate should exhibit a good understanding of the airline industry, business operations, processes and systems, it said.

Interested candidates have to submit applications not later than May 6.

Once one of the best organisations, the airline’s performance has been on the decline, attributed to government interference and lack of shareholder support.

Save for the introduction of flights to Zambia last year, the airline has focused on local routes and the Harare-Johannesburg one.

But Air Zim is facing stiff competition on the lucrative Harare-Johannesburg route from South African Airways and low cost carrier fastjet Zimbabwe. The airline has seen a high turnover of CEOs, thanks to government’s meddling in its affairs.

The flag carrier is stuck with obsolete equipment, which is expensive to maintain.
