It has, however, emerged that Mugabe, in his address to war veterans early this month, was referring to the military hierarchy where he is Commander-in-Chief with Chiwenga coming in as his number two.

In a story in our Monday (April 25, 2016) issue of NewsDay, titled ‘War vets avert State capture’, a statement attributed to Secretary for War Veterans, Walter Tapfumaneyi, erroneously stated that President Robert Mugabe had ordained Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Constantine Chiwenga as his “number two” in the Zanu PF succession politics.

It has, however, emerged that Mugabe, in his address to war veterans early this month, was referring to the military hierarchy where he is Commander-in-Chief with Chiwenga coming in as his number two.

It also emerged that it was instead the organisers of the war veterans meeting that had defused the tension between former freedom fighters and the youths. The interview was held last week.

We sincerely apologise to Tapfumaneyi for the mix-up.
