Zimbabwe Warriors and Swaziland share spoils

SWAZILAND…(1)1
ZIMBABWE…(1)1

WARRIORS came from behind to claim a point away in Swaziland, a result which however, did very little in the team’s ambitions to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

BY HENRY MHARA IN LOBAMBA, SWAZILAND

The draw saw Zimbabwe retaining the second spot in the Group L log standings with 5 points, the same number as leaders Swaziland who tops the group due to a superior goal difference.Other group members Guinea and Malawi, both on one point, are probably the major beneficiaries of this afternoon’s result at the Somhlolo Stadium.

The two are set to clash tonight with a good chance to close the gap on the log leaders.

It is the Kalisto Pasuwa coached Warriors side though who will see this as a missed opportunity to take control of the group as a win here would have seen them going three points clear of Swaziland. But on the balance of play, they would take the point as it could have been worse, with goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva making some crucial saves especially late in the match to keep his team’s hopes of qualification alive.

The Warriors, who conceded early against Guinea in their last match in Harare, found themselves behind just after two minutes when fullback Eric Chipeta lost track of his man Felix Badenhorst on the blindside for an easy header past Mukuruva.

Zimbabwe dominated the ball afterwards, but with Pasuwa playing a double link of captain Willard Katsande and Danny Phiri, never really created any meaningful chance with the team clearly lacking creativity in midfield.

They would get their goal, in fortunate circumstances though, when a quickly taken corner by Warriors liveliest player Knowledge Musona, was bundled home by Swaziland defender Sifiso Mabila for an own goal on 44th minute.

Zimbabwe started the second half well, Musona’s stinging shot parried out by Swazi goalkeeper Nhlanhla Gwebu and from the resultant corner kick, Costa Nhamoinesu rattled the bar with a header before the ball was cleared off danger.

But the hosts soon grew into the match and took control especially after the introduction of their talisman Tony Tabetse just after the hour mark.

The veteran forced Mukuruva to make a super save from range on 74th minute and the Dynamos young goalie had to make another double save moments later as Swaziland exploited the gaps left in midfield to attack their opponents.

As the clock ticked away, Mukuruva again kept his side into the contest with yet another top drawer save from a free-kick as the two teams finished the match frantically in seach of an elusive winner.

  1. Please do not expect much from this team. Even if Mourinho was appointed head coach today nothing would come out of this team devoid of talent and creativity. Currently we do not have players with the requisite skills and determination to win. This is due to poor remuneration of players and lack of investment in junior football.

  2. Hope is what we should have. Ngatishande nezviripo and support our warriors while these other issues are looked into. The return match will be to our advantage and we will definately win. Go warriors go.

Standards have surely plummeted to unimaginable extents. The team clearly lacks cohesion even though on paper they look like a ‘galacticos’ of some measure.

Exhibiting a hit-and-run act , ball-fall-on-me street-type soccer, this bunch of ‘pseudo-warriors’ would need to pluck a page off the true feminine warrior book. The girls served us a scintillating ‘carpet soccer’ clinicity that even please the hard-to-please Captain Fiasco.

The warriorship tag, without a corresponding heroic flair, is just but a myth. We need excellent results Period

  4. Um i dont seem to agree with the above comments.Talent abounds in zim.mukuruva, mathew rusike, costa etc are really talented players.i feel the coach let the country down by failing to correct the mistakes he made in the first game ie starting an ineffective malajila, using ultra defensive yet unprofitable twin anchoring and failing to find an attacking midfielder to fill the void btwn the strikers and defenders.he again has forgotten tht billiat and musona are not man markers but ball artists that need a clear supply line.pasuwa please correc these mistakes.we gave the opponents enough room in midfield to play and attack us.the best defence is attacking.period! Aluta continua go worriors go. A point away is very valuable

  7. The team has talent but lacks tact. My finger points to the coach who is responsible for tact. That guy at international stage is useless. Hapana kwatinoenda yesterday it was evident kuti ahana zvaari kuita

  8. I think the team needs enough training time. swaziland was in the camp as from the 14 of march while zimbabwe had only 1 day of training. The team needs to click otherwise it remains 11 Zimbabweans playing individual bhora like bhora ratakagoweserwa.

  9. khama billiart has to come down to earth and work hard otherwise hapana hapana.

  10. I hate people who criticise for the sake of it. Our warriors played well only that they were playing against a resurgent Swaziland team. Its a shame most people always look at the negatives only. Wake up and smell the coffee.

  12. we have a highly talented central midfielder in Marvelous Nakamba plays in Europe, why is he not being given a chance,Pasuwa should stop this marketing thing of Danny Phiri. Just play Nakamba on Monday along with Evans Rusike and Kuda Mahachi. those who don’t know him search Marvelous Nakamba on youtube and watch.

  14. The display by the warriors was pathetic to say the least. It appears the so called foreign-based players have nothing to offer. They played second fiddle to Swaziland who paraded only local based players. Except for brilliant Tatenda Mukuruva, all other players were lifeless.I wonder why spending much money flying these players from their so-called bases. They lacked cohesion, the midfield was static, the left wing was poorly marked to the extent that Swaziland utilised that area very much; hence their goal came from that side. Or can we say the match was fixed. Remember the Swazi coach saying he wants 4 points from the Zimbabwe matches. Lets wait and see their display on Monday. If they dont win this one, all participating players deserve a thorough beating before they leave for their bases. They should be taught what it means to represent one’s country.

  15. I 100% agree with you #Supporter. The Zim team was completely dead yesterday

  16. lets try Nakamba
