Unlike other beauty contests, Mrs Africa empowers married women.

Zimbabwe pageant country director Patience Lusengo said they were calling on local aspiring contestants between the ages of 25 and 55 to register before March 31.

“Mrs Africa beauty pageant is not just a beauty pageant in the traditional sense of the word.

The pageant is not a beauty contest, but it is about women, identifying and praising all their skills, accomplishments and recognising that women can succeed in work, life and relationships,” Lusengo said.

“The beauty industry is built on ageism. Mrs Africa Zimbabwe is bringing a refreshing space in which women can celebrate the spirit of the pageant. We are obsessed with looking at women when they are young, single and available, but society does its best to ignore older women and this pageant wants to make women more visible when they have life experience and something to say.”

Lusengo said interested contestants should register their details on [email protected].

“The pageant has become the most prestigious, most looked forward to and respected contest on the calendars of most African countries and for the first time Zimbabwean women have a chance to enter the competition. Mrs Africa Zimbabwe 2016 is looking to crown a Zimbabwean woman with beauty, intelligence and a purpose,” Lusengo said.

Over the years there have been a variety of pageants meant to cater for different women who could not fit into the specifications of mainstream pageants that targeted women between 17 and 25 years who are tall, slim and never married.

Pageants like Miss Biggie Matofotofo were also created to cater for full-figure women.
