“Theft and vandalism are really drawing us back and, as we speak, from January to date we have had about 108 cases of vandalism,” the company’s general manager, Julian Chinembiri, said yesterday.

“We have lost equipment worth $500 000 and we still have people vandalising our lines to steal copper, while others are going for transformers to take oil. We urge all Zimbabweans to assist us in curbing this problem. We are working with the Zimbabwe Republic Police to make sure that we also do the patrols and mitigate vandalism.”

He also disclosed that about 130 000 smart meters would be delivered soon.

Chinembiri said the power utility had managed to drop levels of load-shedding and was now looking at installing smart meters on large power users.
