The by-election was boycotted by the more established opposition parties.

Although there were no queues at most polling stations, Gangarahwe managed to surpass the previous 10 153 votes received by expelled MP Sylvester Nguni in the 2013 elections.

According to the 2013 voters’ roll, there are 26 913 registered voters in Mhondoro-Mubayira constituency.

Nguni was recently expelled from Zanu PF over accusations of being aligned to former Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) party. Gangarahwe yesterday claimed his victory had silenced ZimPF and MDC-T officials, who were secretly campaigning for Nyanganya.

“We were not fighting one candidate, but all opposition parties because they were telling their supporters to vote for the Freedom Front candidate and that 1 000 votes is what they all garnered. We are doing well as a party as our numbers continue to go up ” he said.

Zanu PF political commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere, who was accompanied by politburo member, Jonathan Moyo, said Mujuru’s party would collapse before the 2018 elections.

“We are not worried about these emerging parties like ZimPF. We know they will die a natural death because they have links with former colonialists, as evidenced by their desire to rejoin the Commonwealth club,” he said.
