MANAGEMENT at upmarket club, The Volt, has given a lifeline to rhumba music following the introduction of a rhumba night session meant to resuscitate the ailing genre that dominated music circles in the 1990s.

A member of the club’s management team, Spencer Madziya, told NewsDay that they have introduced the sessions to cater for mature patrons not taken in by the rage of the moment, Zimdancehall.
“We got a call from our friends who hail from neighbouring countries, but resident here saying they were starved of rhumba music and we took the initiative to cater for them,” Madziya said.
“We have chosen Saturdays as the ideal day for this initiative. Remember in the 1990s the country hosted artistes like Kanda Bongo Man, Pepe Kalle, Werason and so on.”
Top rhumba DJs have been roped in ahead of the maiden session this Saturday. Diamond Musica frontman DJ Savvane (real name Pitschoe Lumiere) will be on the decks alongside DJ Mnari, and DJ Cavvasy.
“We wouldn’t want to confine the session to rhumba music only so we call it the best of both worlds where rhumba meets zimdancehall’s finest DJs, Gary B Flevah and DJ Flevah. The dominant music will be, however, Tanzanian bongo flavour, Angolan kizomba, Nigerian music, Zambian as well as a touch of our very own zimdancehall in the mix,” Madziya said.
