AMH, the biggest private newspaper group in the country, is the publisher of NewsDay, The Standard, Zimbabwe Independent and Southern Eye.

This is the second award the portal has won after being awarded the Highway Telkom Africa Most Innovative Newsroom Award in Grahamstown, South Africa, in 2013 in recognition of ground-breaking content strategies that included live blogging, audio and video publishing using moving screens.

It was noted then that AMH was a leader in accelerating the digital first strategy in line with world trends.

“Our digital first strategy has been in motion since we realised the importance of engaging the readers where they are. This is testimony to the collective effort we have been spending hours investing in. I am proud of the team and we assure advertisers and users of our mobile platforms and websites that innovation is our buzzword and we keep improving as trends change around us,” AMH Managing Director, Vincent Kahiya said.

In 2014, the award-winning website was ranked as the most accessed online platform on mobile devices in Zimbabwe, beating some of the most popular international sites like Twitter, Yahoo and YouTube.

According to Opera Software’s State of the Mobile Web report, www.newsday.co.zw comes third after international sites such as Facebook and Google.

“The country with most local websites in the top-10 list is Zimbabwe, with four out of the 10 spots being local sites, with national top-level domains. NewsDay, a news site, leads the pack in Zimbabwe,” part of the report reads. NewsDay has a strong social media presence, with its Facebook past the half a million-mark likes (583 000 likes) and Twitter account leading mainstream media with 125 000 followers.

NewsDay has an average of 13,5 million page views a month, an impressive figure that has seen the market responding by jostling to advertise on the digital platform.

Group Chief Operating Officer, Kangai Maukazuva was ecstatic about the recognition and award.

“We are proud to be rewarded with this accolade as it comes as confirmation that our digital strategy is generating excitement not for us alone, but for our audiences as well . . . we believe this is just the beginning of a fundamental digital journey together with them.”

NewsDay Editor, Wisdom Mdzungairi added that the collective team effort of reporters and a deliberate bias towards creating multimedia stories had won the hearts of the readers.
