MANICALAND secondary schools Folk Dance and Music Festival continues to grow in leaps and bounds, after more than 50 schools participated in the third edition of the festival over the weekend.

The schools participated in three categories, which included traditional dance, mbira and marimba, with Gaza High School from Chipinge coming out tops in the traditional dance category, while Pafiwa High was second.
For their efforts, Gaza won a floating Wimpy-sponsored trophy, shield and $150. In the mbira category, Marange High School were the overall winners, while Makumbe High School from Buhera settled for second position, as Crossdale Secondary School came first in the marimba category.

In an interview with NewsDay on the sidelines of the event, the festival director, Taurai Moyo applauded the sponsors for putting up a successful event.
“This year’s festival was well organised, as it attracted many schools, in the last two editions we would select schools, but this time almost all the schools in Manicaland came for the festival. We promise another bigger and better event next year,” he said.
“The bigger attendance showed that our children still uphold our culture, we would like to thank our partners Wimpy, host school, St Dominics, and our major sponsors Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust for making the festival a success.”

The festival was held under the theme Investing in Women in Arts Empowerment and Enterprise; Rethinking the Role of Arts Development in Zimbabwe and Promoting Gender Equality.
Among the guests at the festival were provincial education director, Edward Shumba and deputy director in the National Arts Council, Nicholas Moyo.
The annual Folk Dance and Music Festival is organised by Bembera Ensemble in collaboration with the National Association of Secondary School Heads Manicaland.
