Cop up for Mugabe, Grace slurs

A HARARE-BASED police officer has landed himself in trouble for allegedly labelling President Robert Mugabe as “too old to rule” and saying he married a prostitute”.

The Cranborne-based Thompson Joseph Mloyi (44) was yesterday arraigned before provincial magistrate Elijah Makomo on charges of undermining the authority of or insulting the Office of the President.

Mloyi was remanded out of custody to next Tuesday on $100 bail pending trial.

Allegations against Mloyi are that last Saturday he made the comments at Cranborne Barracks before officers of the Police Reaction Group based at the camp.

“At around 6am, the accused person (Mloyi) entered the barrack while other officers were preparing to go to work and without being provoked, the accused started shouting, indicating that President Robert Mugabe is too old to rule and he married a prostitute, Grace Mugabe,” the State papers read. “When he was confronted by other officers, he got out of the barrack and went away.”

Meanwhile, a retired police officer, Shadreck Mutota, was yesterday slapped with a $300 fine or in default of payment to serve a 30-day prison term after being convicted of supplying false information to a public administrator.

Mutota is said to have alleged that some senior police officers had been seen at a gathering with Zimbabwe People First leader Joice Mujuru.

Mutota appeared before provincial magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe facing charges of supplying false information to a public administrator.

He was convicted on his own plea of guilty.

It was the State case that Mutota had told Harare provincial administrator, Alfred Tome that Chief Superintendent Beauty Mangwende had been seen driving in Mujuru’s convoy.

In passing sentence, Chikwekwe said by pleading guilty, Mutota had shown contrition, but what he had done could have created acrimony in the force.

“Against this, as a former police officer, you lied against a high-ranking officer. Such falsehoods would have caused schisms in the force. You broke the trust bestowed on you,” he said.
