During the era of the Government of National Unity, these same people were politicking, accusing Finance minister Tendai Biti of trying to sabotage the smooth running of the government then.

Biti never failed to pay civil servants their bonuses and salaries on time.

As I am writing, civil servants do not know when they are going to be paid this month. What Civil Service Commission (CSC) boss MariyawandaNzuwah is saying is not new to some of us. As the CSC boss, Nzuwah should just fire those who are not supposed to be in the system. It is true that polytechnics have lecturers whose qualifications are below the levels they are teaching.

Some supporting staff are highly qualified compared to the so-called lecturers.

Nzuwa’s office is the source of the problem since he is the employer. Something is not adding up for me here.

About 167 269 civil servants, excluding those in the uniformed and health services, are paid $2 billion, right? Then I ask how many do we have in the uniformed and health services who are paid the $1,3bn being the remainder of the $3,3bn paid in salaries. Is this not indicative of where some of the problems are?

That we have overstaffing in the uniformed sector, especially for a peaceful country like ours with a relatively low crime rate, boggles the mind.

The report is a bit silent on people who are paid salaries that are not commensurate with the jobs they are doing. You will be surprised how much money is lost to this.
