The Paralympic Games are scheduled to start on March 31 to April 4 in Gwanda, but none of the participating provinces have paid the fees.

“We are doing what we can to mobilise resources for the games. Financially, we are not getting where we want to be and we have decided to mobilise resources,” Abinel Mseva, the local organising committee general manager, said yesterday.

He said provinces were still to pay their affiliation fees and this was hindering preparations. “We have not received payment from the provinces and we have not received the grant from the government. We have to prepare for the athletes and officials that will come for the games,” he said.

Matabeleland South had budgeted $328 166 to successfully host the games with provinces paying $50 per participating athlete.

Initially, the provinces had to pay half the affiliation fees by February 5 and the balance by March 30 when the general managers would leave for the games.

“In terms of planning, it puts us in a difficult position because we have to prepare for the athletes and visitors. We have to raise $16 755 to accommodate our VIPs. We cannot book the lodges without a downpayment,” said Mseva.

Mseva made an appeal to the corporate world.

“My appeal is to the corporate world and the provincial leadership. It is proving difficult to raise the money that we need. We are only a few days before the games and we are appealing for material donations,” he said.
