gavel-2 Mutsa Mafuta pleaded guilty to the assault charge when he appeared before Mbare magistrate, Gladys Moyo.

Mafuta had initially been sentenced to three months imprisonment, which was then wholly suspended on condition he performs community service.

The court heard that on February 4 this year, Mafuta got home drunk in the evening and found his sister-in-law Christine Munhamo (40) eating sadza.

When Mafuta asked for his food Munhamo told him there wasn’t any, but she would cook for him.

This did not go down well with Mafuta, who then went on to assault her all over the body with open hands and an iron bar on the head.

In mitigation, Mafuta said he was sorry about his behaviour, saying he had only assaulted Munhamo because he was drunk.

“I am sorry about my actions and I have even apologised to my sister-in-law,” he said.

Munhamo did not a produce a medical report as evidence in court.

Gerald Date appeared for the State.
